Good News For All Selfie Lovers, 3D Selfie Is Finally Here

If you love taking selfies, here comes something new to experiment with. Researchers at the University of Nottingham in Britain have developed a technology capable of producing 3D facial reconstruction from a single 2D image - the 3D selfie

The new web app allows people to upload a single colour image and receive, in a few seconds, a 3D model showing the shape of their face.

Aside from the more standard applications, such as face and emotion recognition, this technology - scheduled to be presented at the International Conference on Computer Vision (ICCV) 2017 in Venice in October -- could be used to personalise computer games, improve augmented reality and let people try on online accessories such as glasses.

It could also have medical applications - such as simulating the results of plastic surgery or helping to understand medical conditions such as autism and depression.

The technique was developed using a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) - an area of artificial intelligence (AI) which uses machine learning to give computers the ability to learn without being explicitly programmed.

The research team trained a CNN on a huge dataset of 2D pictures and 3D facial models. With all this information their CNN is able to reconstruct 3D facial geometry from a single 2D image. It can also take a good guess at the non-visible parts of the face.

"The main novelty is in the simplicity of our approach which bypasses the complex pipelines typically used by other techniques. We instead came up with the idea of training a big neural network on 80,000 faces to directly learn to output the 3D facial geometry from a single 2D image," said Georgios (Yorgos) Tzimiropoulos, Assistant Professor in the School of Computer Science.

"Our CNN uses just a single 2D facial image, and works for arbitrary facial poses (for example, front or profile images) and facial expressions (for example, smiling)," lead researcher Aaron Jackson said.

The technique demonstrates some of the advances possible through deep learning - a form of machine learning that uses artificial neural networks to mimic the way the brain makes connections between pieces of information.

You can also get a 3D selfie by uploading a 2D facial image to their website.

How does the Internet Work?

The  Internet  is the backbone of the Web, the technical infrastructure that makes the Web possible. At its most basic, the Internet is a large network of computers which communicate all together. The history of the Internet is somewhat obscure. It began in the 1960s as a US-army-funded research project, then evolved into a public infrastructure in the 1980s with the support of many public universities and private companies. The various technologies that support the Internet have evolved over time, but the way it works hasn't changed that much: Internet is a way to connect computers all together and ensure that, whatever happens, they find a way to stay connected. A Simple Network When two computers need to communicate, you have to link them, either physically (usually with an Ethernet Cable ) or wirelessly (for example with Wifi  or Bluetooth  systems). All modern computers can sustain any of those connections. Such a network is not limited to...

How Can I Find Out If Someone's Stealing My Wi-Fi?

How can I find out if other people are leeching my Wi-Fi, and how do I stop them if they are? Besides the fact that your WiFi moocher may be slowing down your connection, people connected to your network may also have access to some of your shared folders (depending on what security measures you use), and if someone's using your connection to do illegal things, like hack the smart things  in your home, it could even bring the authorities to your doorstep. Don't worry, though, I can help you find out if, indeed, your WiFi is being stolen and help you put an end to it. Low-Tech Method: Check Your  Wireless Router  Lights Your  wireless router  should have indicator lights that show Internet connectivity, hardwired network connections, and also any  wireless  activity, so one way you can see if anyone's using your network is to shut down all  wireless  devices and go see if that  wireless  light is still blinking. The trouble ...
